RECAP: Saint Louis FC v San Antonio FC

The Saint Louis FC game plan in the first was to counter with focus.   They had their first opportunity in the 3rd minute when Schillo Tshuma pushed a San Antonio FC turnover past Sam McBride where goalkeeper Matt Cardone made a kick save that would make any hockey fan proud on the breakaway attempt from Saint Louis' number 32.  San Antonio would earn their first scoring chance when Carlos Alvarez, eyeing the far right post, saw his shot go wide.

Saint Louis FC's Irvin Herrera, in his first match back from his El Salvadorian National Team call-up, would put the away side ahead in the 11th minute.  He was able to flick a lofted ball from Jason Plumhoff past the bearded goalkeeper of San Antonio for the first tally of the match  The party would continue in the 15th minute when Jason Plumhoff worked his way to the end line just inside the 18-yard box.  His cut-back pass found Herrera who made no mistake and found the back of the net from near the penalty.

San Antonio FC's Carlos Alvarez interrupted the Saint Louis FC first half with a strike of his own in the 31st minute.  His left-footed half-volley beat Mark Pais to make the score 2-1.

A physical first half, not one that you would call chippy, ended with the score 2-1 and only one yellow card distributed from the center referee Luis Guardia, San Antonio's Taylor Morgan being the recipient.

The second half started with patience and possession from Saint Louis FC holding the one-goal lead.   The first scoring chance of the half came from Frank Tayour who was able to turn on Mitch Lurie for an effort toward the right post.  Mark Pais was quick to the ground to make the save.  In the 54th minute, following a penalty cry from the home crowd, Jordan Roberts found Irvin Herrera on the break.  Herrera worked across the top of the 18 and the San Antonio backline to finish his hat trick with his left foot.

Mark Pais was called into action at a few moments in the second half, notably when Castillo's effort from 30 yards was pushed off the crossbar.  The backline of the team in green was able to send the ball out of trouble.

The best chance for San Antonio in the second half was an effort in the 77th minute when Tayour muscled down a cross missed from just right of the penalty mark, throwing himself to the ground knowing he could have made more of the opportunity.

The win is Saint Louis FC's first since July 23rd, also marks the first 3 points for Interim Head Coach Tim Leonard.  "Feels good to get the first win under your belt, we felt we deserved it sooner, we will take this performance any day of the week," said Leonard about the team.  "This group of guys have been working extremely hard for the last three weeks, without any results to show for it.  Now we focus on a home result against Louisville."
