STLFC Claims Point on the Road to Start 2017 Campaign

Louisville, KY – Saint Louis FC and Louisville City FC played to a scoreless draw in front of 6,758 fans at Louisville Slugger Field to open the 2017 USL season for both clubs.

Louisville City FC enjoyed most of the possession in a game that suffered from a lack of clear scoring opportunities for either side. The best chance fell to Louisville's Tarek Morad in the 9th minute as his header crashed off the crossbar following a corner. Corner kicks were the statistic of the game as Louisville had sixteen in comparison to the two created by Saint Louis FC. The away team's fortunes began to turn in the second half as substitute Max Alvarez began to test the Louisville defense, but Saint Louis FC will be happy to walk away from a difficult opponent with a point on the road to start the season.

The first half started enthusiastically for both teams as they struggled to find a rhythm with high pressing and misplaced passes. The first real chance came from a Louisville corner kick as Morad's header smacked off the crossbar and was cleared to safety by a stalwart Saint Louis FC defense in the 9th minute. The next opportunity came to Louisville's sensational rookie from Indiana University, Richard Ballard, who broke down the right wing but shot into the side netting in the 19th minute. At the end of the first half, Louisville goalkeeper Ranjitsingh suffered an apparent groin injury and had to be substituted for the remainder of the game by Dobrowolski.

Saint Louis FC started the second half with decent spells of possession but a string of fouls and yellow cards from both clubs stalled the play as most of the scoring chances fell to Louisville. Max Alvarez replaced Jose Angulo up front for Saint Louis FC in the 78th minute and his introduction led to the best opportunity for the away side as his corner kick found AJ Cochran at the back post with a header that was cleared from the six-yard box in the 87th minute. The game finished 0-0 as both teams claim a point to start the new 2017 season.
